“Artemis Fowl” by Eoin Colfer, ©2001

I could not help thinking, “What if he had to hurt or even kill someone or something? Could he do it?” He is presented as a merciless criminal, and he is performing as such, but the situation is not developed that he would have to make such a choice. But he is only twelve years old, so the question is could he?
I always enjoy these teenager stories. They are so interesting and the stories are generally pretty good. This is the story of a little boy genius following in his fathers footsteps. His father was a criminal mastermind. His mother is distraught by is disappearance a year or so before the story.
Artemis Fowl acquires, by a bit of deceit a book of the elves, gnomes, dwarves, etc. With this book he concocts to get hold of a bunch of gold. He underestimates the power of the elves. They underestimate his power. In the end everyone is happier, though the elves are a bit poorer. He gets his mother healed by the power of one of the elfs.

The camera is great, the small size makes it easy to carry it around. Pictures are of good quality. The indoor shooting is too good to compare with my old Sony. My only problem is the battery life is too short. Hope it’s just mine. It barely worked for me for a 2-day trip, and we didn’t use the flash light a lot. I consider that unacceptable.

Anyone who has a heart cannot help but be moved by this book. Taking place in the 1960’s South, the author manages to take on the voice of both Skeeter, a young white upper class woman, as well as the black maids that she writes about. As different as the women are, the author reminds us of their similarities as women.

When Skeeter begins a secret project to interview and write about the plight of the black maids, she is met by resistance from white women in her circle as well as the maids themselves, who fear that talking about their situation can cost them their jobs and worse. The reader gets the feeling that these women are actually people that we know.

Interestingly, the author is a product of the South and was raised by a black maid, Demetrie. The author indeed writes about what she knows and her one regret is not asking Demetrie what her life was like before she died. Hence…this wonderful book!

I bought this screen protector several months ago, and was very pleased with it. I didn’t even get around to using the included finger cots, as it was easy to hold the film by the edges. The film went on well without any problems with bubbles, and a slight burnishing did the trick. The film fit the camera’s LCD screen perfectly. I feel confident that this film will protect the screen from minor scratches, and my main concern, which is, even with the Canon viewfinder extender in place, that my nose will continuously smudge the LCD screen. With this screen protector in place, I don’t worry about wiping off the grease.

The price is a bit high, but when you’re talking about so much for a camera, $9.95 for protection is nothing.

I clung to Word 2000 for as long as I could, “upgrading” in a weak moment right before Christmas when I realized that the incompatibility between Outlook 2007 and Word 2000 would render me unable to print labels for my Christmas cards. Oh, how I wish I had just gotten out a pen and spent the 5+ hours or so it would have taken me to write out those addresses with a pen (or chiseled them on a rock, for that matter). The many, many more hours of frustration that have occupied my weeks since the big “upgrade” make those hours seem trivial. The interface is unbelievably bloated with meaningless graphics and obscure tools, familiar tools are hidden among the weeds, things I used to do with one click now require multiple clicks. Basic tasks are buried. Even the help button is hidden! I am already developing a hand injury from repeat strain from keyboarding and mouse activities, and this product will put this issue on fast forward, I can tell. If you are an experienced Word user, I recommend that you pass on this upgrade.
