I bought this in a batch of books for holiday reading. The other books were by recognised authors (which were disappointing) and Dog Eats Dog was something of a risk because I’d never heard of the author, and the reviews were sparse. What a pleasant surprise. It’s a refreshingly cynical crime story with an engaging, intelligent bank robber at its centre – an amoral, smart, darkly funny tale peopled by not very nice, but immensely likeable characters, it reminded me in places of Elmore Leonard at his best.

The characterisation becomes a little loose in the second half – a very smart, female FBI agent becomes unaccountably dumb at crucial stages for no other reason, it seems, than mild inebriation and hangovers – but this apart, the plot races along, and by that time I liked the characters so much that I was prepared to overlook a little artistic licence.

I look forward to more. Recommended. 4.5 stars.

LURE OF THE SEA

I purchased my first Seagate drive in 2003 when it was recommended to me by an independent computer technician an abnormally proficient amateur computer technician. I have never had 1 of my 9 external seagate hard drives fail. I have them ranging from 200GB, 300GB, 750GB and now 1TB. They “turn off” like any hard drive when it is not in use by stopping the spin of the drive. They do this to reduce energy use and to not wear out the drive, but they do not shut down completely. Now, these people may have had genuinely defective drives, but these are the most reliable and uncomplicated drives I’ve ever had for working with both PC and Mac. I highly recommend them to friends and they too haven’t had problems over the years. So as I approach the 6 years of use on 3 of my drives I feel confident in saying that I can easily recommend this product for all kinds of use. I do independent film work and shuttle large video and music files back and forth from drive to drive throughout the years, so I give these things a workout. Highly recommended, and this particular 300GB model is great for stacking in on top of similar shelled models!

I’ve waited a life time for a vacuum like the Hoover Tempo Widepath! I’ve purchased 4 in the last 8 years, and none of them could come close to the performance of this little darling. And, I can’t believe that it works so well, but costs so little. I never expected such a GREAT product at this price point! As wonderful as the Tempo is, it does have 2 small negatives. 1., the cord is too short, 2. the attachement hose is also too short, and it sucks-in on it’s self. Annoying…yes, but forgiveable because otherwise this vacuum sucks it’s butt off! Cat hair on my carpet is now a thing of the past!

I agree with one of the other reviews that if you are a Christian this book does go against some of the fundamentals that Christians embrace.
I have the second and third books and in there he says that Hitler went to Heaven because death is not really bad. If you have no solid Christian doctrines than you might believe what the author says. We have no real way of knowing the truths of these books. Don’t always assume it is true, but it can be interesting reading. Please just beware of what you read and absorb from these books. They are not total truths or doctrines.
Flip Flop Standard Party

I have previously owned a device similar to this but water got into it because the instuctions weren’t properly followed. I found that this is a very worthwhile item to own. We use it at Halloween, Christmas, Camping and all summer to turn our water fountain on and off. If used properly it should last a long time. After having one I will not be without it. In fact I purchased two.

The novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger is a powerful novel chronicling the life of an upper class teenage boy, Holden Caulfield during the early 1950’s. Around this time, more and more people were conforming to society, dressing the same, acting the same, and through Holden, Salinger challenges those ideals. The book opens when Holden is expelled from yet another boarding school, because of his awful grades. He finds the world around him to be fake, and those people who demand him to conform to be phonies, not true to themselves. He sets off for New York City on his own, in a journey of self-exploration where he learns about love, life, and sex. As a troubled youth, he is a constant pessimist about the world around him, seeing it to be a mass conformist nation, without any true individuals, except for himself of course. His early life is troubled, and his younger brother’s death shook him badly, and effected him deeply. Some of the pessimism comes from his older brother, a writer who in Holden’s opinion became a prostitute for Hollywood, abandoning his own writing to work for the movies, selling out in the worst way.His parents seem vastly absent in the novel, perhaps suggesting that his parents are not role models for him, and while they may love him, they do not truly understand him. Without this adult guidance he mistrusts the adult world, a cynical view which pervades the whole book. This kind of teenage rebellion is something that the youth of today can easily relate to. Holden himself is an easily relatable character, and modern teens will find something of his character similar in themselves, whether that’s his cynicism, or his constant thoughts about sex. He is confused by sex, but still finds it intriguing, and of course wants very badly to experience it. He goes on a date, with an old friend, and while he tries very badly to be charming, he cannot stand how absolutely fake he feels she is, and this leaves him disappointed with the world in gene
